The Official Higgins for Congress ‘08 Blog

The new site is here!

August 25th, 2008

Welcome to the re-launched version of our campaign website. I am delighted to have you check out what’s new on higginsforcongress.com. After three and one-half years as a member of the House of Representatives, I think often about how lucky I am to have been chosen by my community to be its voice in Washington DC. It’s a responsibility and an honor that continues to awe me.

As I write this during the last few weeks of August, it’s amazing to me how quickly this summer has gone by. As I think about what’s gone on this summer, I like to reflect on the successes we’ve had in changing the look and feel – and the outlook, frankly – of Buffalo and Western New York. A few weeks back, when we opened the re-watered Commercial Slip along Buffalo’s Inner Harbor waterfront, I said, “Today is a day for the believers.” And it was. And today is as well.

Take a look at what’s happening on Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, where a $80 million project of road improvements is converting the Outer Harbor from a confusing maze of one way roads into a plan that will assist in fundamentally transforming that area into a combination of commercial, residential and recreational space the likes of which our region has not seen in generations. Just last week we celebrated the grand opening of the Greenbelt at the northern end of the Outer Harbor, where a $14 million mix of funds from federal, state and local sources have transformed what formerly appeared to be a garbage dump into some of the most exciting recreational space in the region.

What’s great is that we’re seeing new and exciting things throughout the region. From finishing the landings for the Bemus-Stow Ferry on Chautauqua Lake to road improvements in the Village of Hamburg to recreational developments along the Chadakoin River in historic Jamestown, changes are being made that will in the long run promote opportunities for private sector investment and job growth in our region.

As I say to most of the audiences I speak with, the first thing I do when I get to Washington DC is figure out how quickly I can get back to Western New York. What I see when I return to Buffalo provides me with an urgent reminder of why I was sent there in the first place – to make the federal government work for Buffalo and Western New York.

This community has continued to honor me with its support over the past several months, and I am tremendously grateful for the trust and support you have placed in me. I hope to earn your support again this year. Thanks again for taking some time to visit our revamped website, and be sure to come back soon for more blog updates and other information about our campaign for re-election.
